Today, we will first look at the two pieces of writing that you submitted to me.

On the written under exam conditions piece there many minor mistakes. The overall message was clear and understood.

There were:

  • verb conjugation issues.

  • issues using the correct accents (and adding accents where the are none).

  • gender issues and adjectival agreement issues.

We will discuss the conjugation of verbs (at least in the present temse for regular verbs).

I am sure you are aware of these in day-to-day spoken situations, but under exam conditions these sometimes vanish... see the step-by-step guide to verbs in French:

We can discuss the general purpose of accents and what (if any) affect they have on the word and its pronunciation.

We can look at adjectival agreement with number and gender.

There really is not much generally available online for the TCF IRN Examination itself.

However, this is what I have located online from various sources (mainly the Institut Français itself.)

The TCF IRN (Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité) is the required 1-hour 35-minute French language test for nationality, covering oral/written comprehension and expression, targeting B1/B2 levels.

It consists of 25 listening/25 reading MCQs, plus written and oral tasks.

Official past papers are not released, but candidates should use mock tests from official sources to prepare for the format.

Key Details of TCF IRN (For Nationality):

  • Purpose: Required for French nationality (needs minimum B1 level in all 4 skills) or long-term residence.

  • Structure:

    • Listening (20 min): 25 questions.

    • Reading (35 min): 25 questions.

    • Writing (30 min): 3 tasks.

    • Speaking (10 min): 3 tasks (individual with an examiner).

  • Format: Multiple-choice questions (MCQ) with increasing difficulty.

Where to Find Practice Materials & Prep:

Exam Tips:

  • Timing: The exam is fast-paced; manage your time carefully, especially in written expression.

  • Oral Expression: Task 1 is a structured interview, Task 2 is interactive (e.g., asking for information), and Task 3 is expressing a point of view.

  • Preparation: Focus on daily life situations, as the test focuses on practical, everyday French

This page gives detailed ideas for preparing for the spoken part.

This one is a 90 minute test for the TCF online with no ability to pause...
