(For CR) - As mentioned before consoldiation week:

We are going to use an open source software that you could install on your own systems and that is availble under Apps Anywhere for the University networked PCs.

It is called AegisSub

There is a portable version that operates entirely from a memory stick, one for Windows and one for Mac.

Sometimes I found the Mac version was not so was not entirely compatible, but all were updated in 2024.

Once you have activated Aegisub either on your own device or on a University PC using Apps Anywhere

For those whose L2 in French - Try subtitling into French from 0:54 to about 1:50 this clip

For those whose L2 is English - Try subtitling into English this clip.

Today, we will look at the text you were given and construct a top copy together.

You can then make sure your version is the best you can make it.

Following consolidation week, we will be embarking on subtitling. There are a few free packages out there and many rather costly paid for ones.

Imagining you had to write a commentary ...

How was the translation?

Who might your text be aimed at? (Audience/Purpose)

How confident are you that yours would read like a text written for an Anglophone?

What were the difficulties?

What did you do to solve the issue?

What theory could relate to this?

What can you conclude overall?

(Part of your assessment on subtitling requires you to write a commentray so this thought process is a good intorduction to it...)

If you would like to have a go at writing a commentary I could certainly have a look at it for you...

If all is complete and we are happy with our 'top copy', how would you have translated the text from this video (below)?

That must have been done by someone who thinks they know English rather than a bonafide translator (I hope at least). We did look at a few minutes of this last week.

It is a challenge.

What about this extract from a school children's holiday brochure? Can you put it into English and upload the translations to the shared folder?

Or, for a bit of cultural research and translation of an aural text, how would you translate the message in this news bulletin from TF1 about Halloween in France into English?
